— You are the Weapon --
"I have been a student of the martial arts since the age of 8. I studied many arts from Tae Kwon Do to traditional Kung Fu styles growing up, but my focus since 1993 has been Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Muay Thai, and traditional Western boxing and wrestling. It was through this love of combat arts and desire to learn effective self-defense that I started exploring firearms. When I get into something, I become completely obsessed and must get knowledge on that subject from any and every resource. When I first picked up Mossad Ayoob’s books In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection and his Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry, I was hooked. I took some basic classes and began to practice basic pistol skills with some friends. With my personal training background, I thought was pretty good at teaching so I decided to pursue becoming an NRA instructor. I was certified as an NRA Instructor in 2009 and began teaching people one on one to families and small groups. Since then I have completed numerous tactical pistol and carbine courses and have received training from some of the most elite military and police personnel. I am also very active in medical training and believe everyone should learn basic trauma management skills. You should not only be able to take a life, but to save one as well.
As I taught more, I realized people needed a simple understanding of BOTH unarmed and armed fighting. I thought about it more and more and who does everyone look to as masters of weapons and fighting? The military and police! Do they study one single martial art for 20 years? NO! They get a quick crash course in hand-to-hand fighting and weapons qualification. They learn COMBATIVES. They learn and master the basics and perfect those skills by practicing on a regular basis. They also maintain some level of fitness so when they need to fight, they physically can. I started combining what I thought were the most logical self-defense techniques from striking to grappling to edged weapons and firearms and teaching people these basics. I was amazed in how much they could improve and get some real defensive skills in such a short period. I was also able to develop a program to teach to young ladies in high school and college focused on staying safe at school or on campus and rape prevention skills which I’m hugely passionate about. I currently go to college sororities and give a lecture on rape prevention with my wife for free because I believe it is so important.
I am currently a guest coach for The Complete Combatant in Birmingham, AL and at their Marietta, GA location. I am the Director of Fitness and Wellness for Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama where I manage the fitness facility and do personal training and small group fitness classes. When I’m not working at the club or teaching firearms and self-defense; I love spending time with the most important aspect of my life: my beautiful wife and two sons. I truly love helping and coaching people, it brings me tremendous joy to be able to hopefully be a positive impact and give them some little piece of knowledge that could possibly save their life one day. I am a forever student and can’t wait to learn from everyone! I guess my motto is lets work together and grow together so we can all walk around a little safer."
